Synopsis (5M 2W)
Feeling spurned by the contemporary art world, Thomas Prentiss forges a painting by The Spanish Forger -- a real life historical figure whose real identity remains, to this day, a mystery. By The Master's Hand threads together several disparate stories involving a wealthy heiress selling a painting, a gallery owner, and two wealthy buyers to comment on the nature of the beauty, authenticity, and the underlying hypocrisies of the art economy.
Production History
By The Master's Hand was developed, in part, through a reading at Victory Garden's Theater (Chicago), The Road Theatre Company (Los Angeles), and The Link Theatre Company (Los Angeles). The play was a semi-finalist for the Playwrights First Award at The National Art Club, and a finalist for the Steppenwolf Theatre Company's PlayLab.
